Marty's Joke of the Day

Marty's Joke of the day is an internet column that I've written for more than 5 years.
I tell humorous stories about my "sweet wife" and raising our 4 young sons, named #1, #2, #3, and #4.
After 5 years of story telling, in August of 2005, doctors found a brain tumor in son #4.
Our focus here has changed little as we still try to find humor in our lives.

5/7 - Test - Talk - and Jazz

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Monday, May 07, 2007
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Well, my biology test went only fairly good. I pulled a passing
grade, enough to get paid by my company (I hope!). But, I need to
get into studying a bit more come this fall. I think 7 years
without going to school has softened me up!

The boys are doing well. #1 and #2 went to EFY with me on
Saturday. Both speakers were very funny and motivational. The
first talked about how being tall growing up was hard. Her best
comeback to someone in the airport saying, “Gee, you’re tall. I’ll
bet you play basketball” was, “Gee, you’re short. You must play
miniature golf.”

We also got to hear from a local semi-celebrity, John Bytheway. I
mentioned him here. He was really good speaker too, and I think
the boys and I came away trying to be better people, yet again...

Anyway, half time is about over in the Jazz game. Gotta run!

Enjoy Today’s Jokes!

One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that
goes on inside people. He said, "My son, the battle is between two
"wolves" inside us all. One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy,
sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment,
inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other is
Good . It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness,
benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith."
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his
grandfather: "Which wolf wins?"
The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."

4/10 - Oh Crap!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tuesday, April 10, 2007
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Darn, if I shoulda, woulda, coulda, studied a bit more for my test
today, I could have done better. But, everything is pulling my
strings every which way. (Then my #1 mom sends me a letter that I
put in our 3rd joke spot today. Just a wee bit more pressure.
[grin] Although I did invite her to lunch last Friday which she
politely declined...) Anyway, I won’t know what the results of my
Biology test until Thursday and no sense worrying about it now. I
just need a good enough grade so work will pay for the classes.

While I was at school, my sweet wife went to her ISA meeting.
and son #1 was at Scouts. So, #2, #3 and #4 were at Grandmas. I
stopped by to pick them up and they were watching the history
channel. It was “All About Plumbing” or something like that. They
were really interested, especially when they showed the inventor
of the flush toilet, Thomas Crapper. The boys were rolling on
the floor laughing when the lady said, “and people started saying
where going to the crapper, because that’s what the toilet said
on it.” The boys thought that was the funniest thing in the world.
Then they started getting even sillier telling Crapper joke.
Even son #4 got into the act. But, when we started to leave I got
serious and told them, “Ok, enough Thomas Crapper jokes. We’ve
had our fun, but that’s the end. Ok?” They stopped joking but
were still smiling.

I actually have a pretty good bunch of boys. They know when to
have fun, and when to stop. At least most of the time...

My sister-in-law Bonnie was very busy one day working in her
house. She had just gotten to the basement after quite a few trips
up and down when she heard the telephone ring upstairs. Tiredly,
she ran back up the stairs only to hear a solicitor on the other
end. "Hello, is this Bonnie D?"

"Yes."

"We are calling people in your area and would like to know if you
would help us by participating in a brief survey."

Without missing a beat, she told them, "I'm very busy right now.
You will have to survey your own briefs."

Google has implemented a new feature which enables you to type a
telephone number into the search bar and hit enter and you will be
given the person's name and address. If you then hit MapQuest, you
will get a map to the person's house. Everyone should be aware of
this! It's a nationwide reverse telephone book.

If a child gives out his/her phone number, someone can now look it
up to find out where he/she lives. The safety issues are obvious,
and alarming.

Note that you can have your phone number removed or blocked. I
tried my number and it came up along with the mapquest and
directions straight to our house. I did fill out the removal form
for myself, and encourage all of you to do the same. Quite scary.

Please look up your own number.

In order to test whether your phone number is mapped, go to:
google (http://www.google.com/) Type your phone number in the
search bar (i.e. 555-555-1212) and hit enter. If you want to BLOCK
Google from divulging your private information, simply click on
your telephone number and then click on the Removal Form. Removal
takes 48-hours.

Check your own number and although this may not apply to you if
you have an unlisted number or cell phone as primary contact, but
you may know someone who needs to know this.

Please share this information with friends and family.

After 21 years of marriage, my wife wanted me to take another
woman out to dinner and a movie. She said, "I love you, but I know
this other woman loves you and would love to spend some time with
you."

The other woman that my wife wanted me to visit was my MOTHER, who
has been a widow for 19 years, but the demands of my work and my
three children had made it possible to visit her only
occasionally.

That night I called to invite her to go out for dinner and a
movie.

"What's wrong, are you well," she asked?

My mother is the type of woman who suspects that a late night call
or a surprise invitation is a sign of bad news.

"I thought that it would be pleasant to spend some time with you,"
I responded. "Just the two of us."

She thought about it for a moment, and then said, "I would like
that very much."

That Friday after work, as I drove over to pick her up I was a bit
nervous. When I arrived at her house, I noticed that she, too,
seemed to be nervous about our date.

She waited in the door with her coat on. She had curled her hair
and was wearing the dress that she had worn to celebrate her last
wedding anniversary.

She smiled from a face that was as radiant as an angel's. "I told
my friends that I was going to go out with my son, and they were
impressed," she said, as she got into the car. "They can't wait to
hear about our meeting."

We went to a restaurant that, although not elegant, was very nice
and cozy. My mother took my arm as if she were the First Lady.

After we sat down, I had to read the menu. Her eyes could only
read large print. Half way through the entries, I lifted my eyes
and saw Mom sitting there staring at me. A nostalgic smile was on
her lips. "It was I who used to have to read the menu when you
were small," she said.

"Then it's time that you relax and let me return the favor," I
responded.

During the dinner, we had an agreeable conversation, nothing
extraordinary but catching up on recent events of each other's
life. We talked so much that we missed the movie.

As we arrived at her house later, she said, "I'll go out with you
again, but only if you let me invite you." I agreed.

"How was your dinner date?" asked my wife when I got home. "Very
nice. Much more so than I could have imagined," I answered.

A few days later, my mother died of a massive heart attack. It
happened so suddenly that I didn't have a chance to do anything
for her.

Some time later, I received an envelope with a copy of a
restaurant receipt from the same place mother and I had dined.

An attached note said: "I paid this bill in advance. I wasn't sure
that I could be there; but nevertheless, I paid for two plates –
one for you and the other for your wife. You will never know what
that night meant for me. I love you, son."

At that moment, I understood the importance of saying in time: "I
LOVE YOU" and to give our loved ones the time that they deserve.
Nothing in life is more important than your family. Give them the
time they deserve, because these things cannot be put off till
"some other time".

3/21 - Free Lunch & Skiing Pictures!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wednesday, March 21, 2007
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Not much time to talk tonight. It’s late and I gotta format some
pictures. Yup, my legs are pretty sore from skiing yesterday with
a blind 6 year old. Who’da thunk it? We had a great time (see all
of the pictures on the web site...) They said that son #4 and I
probably made the Utah School for the Blind kindergarten class
record for amount of runs in a 2 hour period. We did 7 or 8 runs
without stopping more than 5 minutes at a time. Son #4 said he had
a great time, and promptly fell asleep on my lap in the bus on the
way home. (I now know that it was excess lactate acid, produced by
my cells, and lack of sufficient oxygen to carry away the waste
that makes my leg muscles sore. Stupid Biology class...)

p.s. Come to a Big Party! I’m inviting YOU to come have lunch with
ME, and my SWEET wife!! I put my business card in at Sizzler, and
I won a lunch for me, and 15 of my friends. It’s scheduled for
Friday, April 6th at 12:30 PM. Each of you will get up to $12 for
lunch. So come see the guy behind the keyboard. Ok, here’s the
caveat; actually it’s a financial guy who said he would talk to
us, as a group, about investing retirement funds with American
Express Financial. He promised he would only talk to us after we
ordered our lunch, and before the food arrived. And he’d be gone
before we started eating. (No more than 10-15 minutes) SO, come
have lunch on me! (Well, sort of anyway). Please RSVP to me ASAP
so I can reserve your spot. (Of course, you have to provide your
own transportation...

"Well, it's like this. Old Charley was in the mixing room, and I

Some of you may know that our 14 year old dog, Abbey, died last
month (8/23). The day after she died, my 4 year old daughter
Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey.
She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got
to heaven, God would recognize her.

She dictated and I wrote:

Dear God,
Will you please take special care of our dog, Abbey? She died
yesterday and is heaven. We miss her very much. We are happy that
you let us have her as our dog even though she got sick. I hope
that you will play with her. She likes to play with balls and swim
before she got sick. I am sending some pictures of her so that
when you see her in heaven you will know she is our special dog.
But I really do miss her.
Love,
Meredith Claire

P.S.: Mommy wrote the words after Mer told them to her.

We put that in an envelope with 2 pictures of Abbey, and addressed
it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it. Then Mer stuck
some stamps on the front (because, as she said, it may take lots
of stamps to get a letter all the way to heaven) and that
afternoon I let her drop it into the letter box at the post
office.

For a few days, she would ask if God had gotten the letter yet. I
told her that I thought He had. Yesterday, for Labor Day, we took
the kids to Austin to a natural history museum. When we got back,
there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch.
Curious, I went to look at it. It had a gold star card on the
front and said "To: Mer" in an unfamiliar hand.

Meredith took it in and opened it. Inside was a book by Mr.
Rogers, When a Pet Dies. Taped to the inside front cover was the
letter we had written to God, in its opened envelope (which was
marked 'Return to Sender: Insufficient address'). On the opposite
page, one of the pictures of Abbey was taped under the words "For
Meredith." We turned to the back cover, and there was the other
picture of Abbey, and this handwritten note on pink paper:

Dear Mer,
I know that you will be happy to know that Abbey arrived safely
and soundly in Heaven! Having the pictures you sent to me was such
a big help. I recognized Abbey right away.

You know, Meredith, she isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here
with me — just like she stays in your heart — young and running
and playing. Abbey loved being your dog, you know. Since we don't
need our bodies in heaven, I don't have any pockets! — so I can't
keep your beautiful letter. I am sending it to you with the
pictures so that you will have this book to keep and remember
Abbey.

One of my angels is taking care of this for me. I hope the little
book helps.

Thank you for the beautiful letter. Thank your mother for sending
it. What a wonderful mother you have! I picked her especially for
you.

I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very
much. By the way, I am in heaven and wherever there is love.

Love,
God and the special angel who wrote this after God told her the
words. As a parent and a pet lover, this is one of the kindest
things that I've ever experienced. I have no way to know who sent
it, but there is some very kind soul working in the dead letter
office. Just wanted to share this act of compassion :) dear friend
— hope you enjoy it as much as I did

3/19 - Dinosaurs and School and Voodoo Dolls Oh My!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Monday, March 19, 2007
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“Grandpa, do you have a copy of Jurassic Park?” Son #1 turned and
asked his Grandpa at Fazolis tonight. “The book or the DVD?”
Grandpa replied. “The book.” Son #1 said. “Nope, I don’t have
either.” Grandpa said with a smile. Grandpa has a deadpan sense of
humor that we’ve all grown up with... we’re used to it, and it’s
even rubbed off on us. But we still smile just to make him think
we’re amused. (grin)

Anyway, because I’m starting back to school tomorrow night; [BTW,
on a side note, I had one of my readers sit down next to me in
Sunday school yesterday. As the instructor was teaching from
Matthew 13 about Parables, my reader leaned over and she whispered
“By the way, I hate that you’re going back to school.” A little
taken aback I said, “Why?” She said, “Because you don’t write as
often!” Ok, yeah, I guess I see your point...]

Anyway, as I was saying, I’m starting back to school on Tuesday
after spring break. Son #4’s birthday just happens to be schedule
that same day. So, for his birthday dinner he decided he wanted to
have us all go out to Fazolis tonight so dad could come with. At
Fazolis they had a family night special where you could get a free
kids meal with every adult entrée. Son #1 said, “Dad, I’ll get a
kids meal, since it’s free and I’m not that hungry.” Now there’s a
change. (The not being hungry part, not the being nice part...) We
all had plenty of food, and I again got to feed the whole crew for
less than $19. Always a good deal.

On the way home, Son #1 said, “Um, I have to have a lot of the
book Jurassic Park read by tomorrow.” Oops... nothing like waiting
until the very last moment to say something. So, when we got home,
my sweet wife grabbed a Barnes and Noble card that we have, and
dashed off to the store with son #1. As they were leaving, son #4
ran out of the door yelling, “I want to go too!” I got a call on
my cell phone 30 seconds later; “I’ve got 1 and 4” “Thanks” I
said. ~click~ Its a little code we use. We’ve been writing and
reading the Joke of the day so long, that it’s often easier to
call our boys by their numbers, rather than their names. (For some
reason numbers aren’t as easy to mix up...) Often in the mall or
somewhere I’ll hear, “Incoming, #3!” Although other’s look at us
strange, I know exactly what that means. ‘Son #3 is running to
you, and you’re now responsible for him. Do you have him?’ “OK!”
is the reply.

At B&N sons #1 and #4 are perusing the aisles. They easily find
Jurassic Park. Of course, you can get a used copy on eBay for $2,
but you’re going to pay through the nose for a new one at B&N. $8!
Son #4 wanted some action too. He saw a voodoo book & doll combo.
“Mom, what’s a voodoo doll?” My sweet wife replied, “It’s a doll
that you pretend is someone else, and you beat it up.” “Mom, I
want a voodoo doll. Paahleease...” he begged. “Nope.” Than, all
through the store he was saying, “Please mom, I want a voodoo
doll!!” She was getting a little embarrassed, but held her ground.
(My sweet wife rocks!) She told me later that there’s no way that
she was going to spend $8 for a little stuffed toy, and a dumb
voodoo doll at that! But, I think it hurried her out of the store
a little quicker!

Enjoy Today’s Jokes!

Years ago I came across a poem entitled "The Man in the Glass" by
Dale Wimbrow. I looked it up on the Internet and discovered a
website maintained by his children: http://www.theguyintheglass.com
It contains the original version written in 1934 and published in
The American Magazine as "The Guy in the Glass." Here is that
Version containing timeless truths about integrity.

When you get what you want in your struggle for self,
And the world makes you King for a day,
Then go to the mirror and look at yourself
And see what that guy has to say.

For it isn't your Father or Mother or Wife
Who judgment upon you must pass.
The feller whose verdict counts most in your life
Is the guy staring back from the glass.

He's the feller to please, never mind all the rest,
For he's with you clear up to the end,
And you've passed your most dangerous, difficult test
If the guy in the glass is your friend.

You may be like Jack Horner and "chisel" a plum
And think you're a wonderful guy,
But the man in the glass says you're only a bum
If you can't look him straight in the eye.

You can fool the whole world down the pathway of years
And get pats on the back as you pass,
But your final reward will be heartaches and tears
If you've cheated the guy in the glass.

Judging from the devoted words of his children, Mr. Wimbrow never
cheated the guy in his glass.

HEART ATTACK IN WOMEN and how it feels......

I've meant to send this to my women friends to warn them that it's
true that women rarely have the same dramatic symptoms that men
have when experiencing a heart attack...you know, the sudden
stabbing pain in the chest, the cold sweat, grabbing the chest &
dropping to the floor that we see in the movies.

Having had a completely unexpected heart attack about 10:30 p.m.
with NO prior exertion, NO prior emotional trauma that one would
suspect might have brought it on, it was this past April 2006,
about 1-1/2 hours after I'd spent a pleasant 2 hrs. rehearsing
with the Note-a-Belles.

I was sitting all snuggly & warm on a cold evening, with my
purring cat in my lap, reading an interesting story my friend had
sent me, and actually thinking, "A-A-h, this is the life, all
cozy and warm in my soft, cushy Lazy Boy with my feet propped up."
A moment later, I felt that awful sensation of indigestion, when
you've been in a hurry and grabbed a bite of sandwich and washed
it down with a dash of water, and that hurried bite seems to feel
like you've swallowed a golf ball going down the esophagus in slow
motion and it is most uncomfortable. You realize you shouldn't
have gulped it down so fast and needed to chew it more thoroughly
and this time drink a glass of water to hasten its progress down
to the stomach, which doesn't do much good, as your esophagus and
throat muscles are in spasm and it hurts to swallow.

This was my initial sensation---the only trouble was that I hadn't
taken a bite of anything since about 5:00 p.m. After that had
seemed to subside, the next sensation was like little squeezing
motions that seemed to be racing up my SPINE (hind-sight, it was
probably my aorta spasming), gaining speed as they continued
racing up and under my sternum (breast bone, where one presses
rhythmically when administering CPR). This fascinating process
continued on into my throat and branched out into both jaws.

AHA!! NOW I stopped puzzling about what was happening. We all have
read and/or heard about pain in the jaws being one of the signals
of a heart attack happening, haven't we?

I said aloud to myself and the cat, "Dear God, I think I'm having
a heart attack!" I lowered the footrest, dumping the cat from my
lap, started to take a step and fell on the floor instead. I
thought to myself, "If this is a heart attack, I shouldn't be
walking into the next room where the phone is or anywhere
else....... but, on the other hand, if I don't, nobody will know
that I need help. And if I wait any longer, I may not be able to
get up in a moment."

I pulled myself up with the arms of the chair, walked slowly into
the next room and dialed the paramedics. I guess when one reaches
them, your address automatically flashes on a screen, as the
operator verified my address immediately and asked my symptoms.

I told her I thought I was having a heart attack due to the
pressure building under the sternum and radiating into my jaws. I
didn't feel hysterical or afraid, just stating the facts, ma'am.
She said she was sending the paramedics over immediately, asked if
the front door was near to me, and if so, to unbolt the door and
then lie down on the floor where they could see me when they came
in. No, I didn't take an aspirin, as I'm allergic to it, but I did
take a 100 mg magnesium oxide capsule...which bottle I keep
handily in reach on the kitchen counter...which is a small detour
on my way to the front door...with about a 3/4 glass of water to
get it dissolving ASAP into my bloodstream.

Magnesium relaxes blood vessels as it dissolves to get them
expanded to let blood get through the constriction of the vessels.
I then laid down on the floor as instructed and lost
consciousness, as I don't remember the medics coming in...their
examination...lifting me onto a gurney or getting me into their
ambulance...or hearing the call they made to St. Jude ER on the
way. But I did briefly awaken when we arrived and saw that the
cardiologist was already there in his surgical blues and cap,
helping the medics pull my stretcher out of the ambulance.

He was bending over me asking questions (probably something like
"Have you taken any medications?") but I couldn't make my mind
interpret what he was saying, or form an answer, and nodded off
again.. not waking up until the cardiologist and partner had
already threaded the teeny angiogram balloon up my femoral artery
into the aorta and into my heart where they installed two side-by-
side stents to hold open my right coronary artery and now was
being taken into the CCU, and looking up at the three anxious
faces of Karen, Mark, and Wendy. Since I'd been a patient at St.
Jude in 2002 for my TIA treatment, they had my emergency info in
their system and had called my kids. I spent two days in CCU and
two in general ward, then was discharged.

I know it sounds like all my thinking and actions at home must
have taken at least 20-30 minutes before calling the paramedics,
but actually it took perhaps 4-5 minutes before the call, and both
the fire station and St. Jude are only minutes away from my home,
and my Cardiologist was already to go to the OR in his scrubs and
get going on restarting my heart (which had stopped somewhere
between my arrival and the procedure) and installing the stents.

Why have I written all of this to you with so much detail?

Because I want all of you who are so important in my life to know
what I learned firsthand, as a Certified Medical Back-Office
Assistant in Internal Medicine Clinics, and as one who has lived
through a heart attack due to:

1. Being aware that something very different was happening in my
body - not the usual men's symptoms, but inexplicable things
happening (until my sternum and jaws got into the act ). It is
said that many more women than men die of their first (and last!)
heart attack because they didn't know they were having one, and
commonly mistake it as indigestion, take some Maalox or other
anti-"heartburn" preparation...and go to bed...hoping they'll feel
better in the morning when they wake up....which doesn't happen.

My female friends, your symptoms might not be exactly like mine,
so I advise you to call the paramedics if ANYTHING is unpleasantly
happening that you've not felt before. It is better to have a
"false alarm" visitation than to risk your life guessing what it
might be!

2. Note that I said "Call the Paramedics," Ladies. TIME IS OF THE
ESSENCE! Do NOT try to drive yourself to the ER. You're a hazard
to others on the road, and so is your panicked husband/friend who
will be speeding and looking anxiously at what's happening with
you instead of the road, and so are your kids or friends a hazard
as well. As sure as I sit here, they will get the attention of a
cop who will pull you over for speeding--more wasted time. Do NOT
call your doctor--he doesn't know where you live and if it's at
night you won't reach him anyway, and if it's daytime, his
assistants (or answering service) will tell you to call the
Paramedics.

He doesn't carry the equipment in his car that you need to be
saved! The Paramedics do--principally OXYGEN that you need
ASAP. Your Dr. will be notified later.

3. Don't assume it couldn't be a heart attack because you have a
normal cholesterol count -- I did, and do, too. Research has
discovered that an elevated cholesterol reading is rarely the
cause of a heart attack (unless it's unbelievably high, and/or
accompanied by high blood pressure). heart attacks are usually
caused by long-term stress and inflammation in the body, which
dumps all sorts of deadly hormones into your system to sludge
things up in there (and, of course, family genetics can be a
factor. I qualify for the latter, and the years 2005 and 2006 have
been the most stressful of my life since Jack died in 1981.)

A serious note about heart attacks: Women should know that not
every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting.
Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line, or even pressure there
and under the sternum, or "indigestion" symptoms, especially if
you haven't eaten in several hours. You may never have the first
chest pain during the course of a heart attack, but heaviness
/pressure under the sternum is common.

Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms, but not
necessarily in women. 60% of people who have heart attacks while
they are asleep do not wake up.

Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let's be careful
and be aware. The more we know, the better chance we can survive.

A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this email sends it to
ten people, you can be sure that we'll save at least one life.

friends you care about.**

3/6 - So he won't smell

Ahh... I just got done with my 2nd Biology test tonight. Only 2
more to go. And I’m thinking tonight I need to get some sleep.
Wakening up at 3AM, wide awake thinking about a college Biology
test is not the best thing to do...

I called my sweet wife on the way home from school and she said
she was busying giving son #4 “a bath for tomorrow.” I said,
“What’s tomorrow?” She said, “The Radiothon, remember?”

Ok, so he has to take a bath to be on the radio... hmm...

Yeah, I guess I almost forgot. After I announced that we would be
on the radio three weeks ago, the shootings at Trolley Square
happened and the radio station decided to postpone the radiothon
until later. They started it today, and it will go on through
tomorrow. We’ll be on the radio tomorrow at 10:40 AM Mountain
time, so be sure and listen to us. You can tune in live at 1160 AM
102.7 FM, or listen on the net here. If anyone can record it for
us, that would be cool. Be sure to get out your check books and
credit cards when you listen!

WHAT IS A GRANDPARENT?
(taken from papers written by a class of 8-year-olds)

Grandparents are a lady and a man who have no little children of
her own. They like other people's.

A grandfather is a man & a grandmother is a lady!

Grandparents don't have to do anything except be there when we
come to see them. They are so old they shouldn't play hard or run.
It is good if they drive us to the shops and give us money.

When they take us for walks, they slow down past things like
pretty leaves and caterpillars.

They show us and talk to us about the color of the flowers and
also why we shouldn't step on "cracks."

They don't say, "Hurry up."

Usually grandmothers are fat but not too fat to tie your shoes.

They wear glasses and funny underwear.

They can take their teeth and gums out.

Grandparents don't have to be smart

They have to answer questions like "why isn't God married?" and
"How come dogs chase cats?".

When they read to us, they don't skip. They don't mind if we ask
for the same story over again.

Everybody should try to have a grandmother, especially if you
don't have television because they are the only grown ups who like
to spend time with us.

They know we should have snack-time before bedtime and they say
prayers with us every time and kiss us even when we've acted bad.

A 6 YEAR OLD WAS ASKED WHERE HIS GRANDMA LIVED. "OH," HE
SAID, "SHE LIVES AT THE AIRPORT AND WHEN WE WANT HER WE
JUST GO GET HER. THEN WHEN WE'RE DONE HAVING HER VISIT,
WE TAKE HER BACK TO THE AIRPORT."

GRANDPA IS THE SMARTEST MAN ON EARTH! HE TEACHES ME GOOD
THINGS BUT I DON'T GET TO SEE HIM ENOUGH TO GET AS SMART AS
HIM!

2/28 - Parent Teacher Ref

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wednesday, February 28, 2007
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Tonight was Parent Teacher conference. I got home late from work,
and I wanted to go play racquet ball with son #1 and his Scouts
tonight, so my sweet wife and I ran to school the second I got
home from work. Both son #1 and #2 got so/so reports. One teacher
said that my son was very smart, but... um... and I said, “lazy?”
she smiled and said, well, yes. I said, Hmm... the apple doesn’t
fall far from the tree. I think I’ve got that syndrome too.

Anyway, when we got home, my sweet wife and I sat each of them
down after dinner and talked to them about their school work. I
think we kind of balance each other out; she being the mom in the
stands type, yelling, “You can do it, go, go!” and me more of the
referee on the court blowing the whistle every time there’s a
foul. It’s not that easy, but I think dad needs to get in the
stands a little more often and do some cheering.

But, a week or so ago son #1 did finally get his grades up enough
that he was allowed to play on his computer. I know the exact date
and time too; with my Vonage phone service, I can go online and
see every call that was made from my house. The second son #1 was
ungrounded, he loaded up a video game and called his cousin. And
in the next 7 days he called him 55 times. For 200+ minutes. He
used up 40% of my monthly minutes in a week. I didn’t give him a
really hard time, because it’s been so long since he got to use
his computer.

Anyway, son #1 and I had a good time playing racquet ball tonight,
but I’ll be sore tomorrow.

Enjoy today’s Jokes

2/8 - Valentines Already?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thursday, February 08, 2007
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Son #3 is my ‘jumpy’ boy who loves holidays. Tonight he asked for
help with his valentine day box. I remember when I was little,
that I took a shoe box. His boxes aren’t “due” until the 13th or
14th, but he wanted to get working on his now. He’s got 3 large
boxes taped together, and says he making a rocket ship out of
them. Hmm... I hope he doesn’t think he’ll get more valentines
stuff if his box is bigger.

I guess I was a little too worried about the test. It was really
hard, and as I sat down for class tonight, I readied myself for a
score of 50 or 60. I surprised even myself when I got an 83. Not
too bad for an old dude! The average was 72. We have 6 people in
our study group, and 4 out of the 5 who were there tonight, got
above average. One guy got 100%. I think I’ll sit next to him
during the next test... (grin)

JURY DUTY SCAM This has been verified on Snopes.com (link listed below) and by
the FBI (their link is also included below). Please pass this on
to everyone in your email address book. It is spreading fast so be
prepared should you get this call. Most of us take those summonses
for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic
duty, that a new and ominous kind of scam has surfaced. Fall for
it and your identity could be stolen, reports CBS.

In this con, someone calls pretending to be a court official who
threateningly says a warrant has been issued for your arrest
because you didn't show up for jury duty. The caller claims to be
a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a
summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social
Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the
information and cancel the arrest warrant Give out any of this
information and bingo! Your identity just got stolen.

The scam has been reported so far in 11 states, including
Oklahoma, Illinois, Colorado, Iowa, and Nebraska . This (scam) is
particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the
phone to try to bully people into giving Information by pretending
they're with the court system. The FBI and the federal court
system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning
consumers about the fraud.Check it out here: http://www.snopes.com/crime/fraud/juryduty.asp

Ok, I guess I was worried about the wrong thing last night. Today
we went to the Utah State Tax commission to plead our case to the
tax judge and the tax commission lady. We told them our sob story,
and after 10 minutes of that they said, “Oh, gee, we moved over to
a new computer system last year, and lost most of your records. We
don’t show that you own anything. As a matter of fact, we owe you
a refund.” We’ll I’ll be dipped. When’s the last time you heard a
whopper like that?

Then, on the other hand; My Biology test tonight was a tough one.
At least I can say that I’ll get some sleep tonight. But now I’ll
have to wait for Thursday for my results. I just have to get a ‘C’
to get paid back from my employer. That’s it. I’ll just shoot for
the average. Hmm...

*New Mormon Themed Restaurant Chain - Get your franchise before
they are all gone!*
This is a sparkling new idea for a chain of non-pretentious Utah
restaurants. The name of these restaurants: "The Steak Center"
(Where There's Never a Dry, Boring Meat-ing!).

Each Steak Center will have one enormous dining area with
basketball hoops at either end, and folding metal chairs and long
tables covered in plastic tablecloths.
The Steak Centers will not have hostesses, but greeters, (men in
their 70's will meet you at the door and talk like they have known
you all your life.)The main menu items will be: the Porterhouse Rockwell
Steak, the Primary Rib, and the Poor Wayfaring Pan of Beef, garnished
with Parsley P. Pratt Funeral Potatoes.

We will also have, when it's in season, Eliza R. Snow crab. And
let's not forget a whole line of "And It Came to Pasta", including
Kraft Moroni and Cheese.

Additionally, we'll have breakfast items, including Pearls of
Great Rice and Frosted Minivans, as well as Adam-ondi-Omelettes.
The house drink is "Tab N Apple Juice."Also available, "In Our Lovely
Desserts", including Fast Sundaes,
Gadianton Cobbler and the sinful Laman Meringue Pie and Lemuel ice
cream.The waiters will be 12 and 13 year-old boys wearing white shirts
and their fathers' ties.At the end of the night the customers will be asked to
help fold up the chairs and tables and vacuum the floor.
Franchises are selling fast...Get yours while they last!!!

2/5 - Happy Tax day to you...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Monday, February 05, 2007
I’ve got a big test tomorrow. Not only in Biology, but at the
state tax commission. After 13 months of letters and pleadings
with the IRS, they finally took pity on my dad’s estate, and took
off a lot of penalties for the 5 years of taxes he didn’t pay
before he died. Yes, it was a huge mess. So, the IRS is done, but
now we have to plead our case to the state tax commission. There’s
a big hearing tomorrow. Ok, our tax guy says it’s just a
formality, but maybe I ought to wear a tie...
Anyway, with that and my first biology test tomorrow, that makes
for a big day ‘eh?
Oh, and happy birthday dad...
David and Bernice had just given their teenage daughter family-car
The next morning her father went out to the driveway to her the
newspaper and came back into the house frowning. At 11:30 am the
girl sleepily walked into the kitchen, and her father asked her,
“Sweetheart, what time did you get in last night?” “Not too late,
A woman was at home with her children when the telephone rang. In
going to answer it, she tripped on a rug, grabbed for something to
hold on to and seized the telephone table. It fell over with a
crash, jarring the receiver off the hook. As it fell, it hit the
family dog, which leaped up, howling and barking. The woman's
three-year-old son, startled by this noise, broke into loud
screams. The woman mumbled some colorful words. She finally
managed to pick up the receiver and lift it to her ear, just in
time to hear her husband's voice on the other end say, "Nobody's
said hello yet, but it certainly sounds as if I have the right
2/1 - Still kick'n
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thursday, February 01, 2007
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi, just a quick note letting you know I haven’t dropped off the
face of the earth, and no, we haven’t taken a 4 week vacation
somewhere. (Although with the crud in the air these last few
weeks, it would have been nice.) It seems that school is taking a
lot of time. Biology isn’t what it was a hundred years ago when I
was in 10th grade. But, it seems (a little bit) more interesting
now.
I’m not used to coming home from work (some nights anyway),
wolfing down dinner in 10 minutes, then running off to school for
half the night. Then, when I get back home, it’s a bit nicer to
talk with my sweet wife and yell at the boys... ahum, wrestle with
the boys, than it is to sit down at the computer and write
stories. But, I thought I’d let you know I was still around.
Son #3 and #4 got their teeth cleaned today. Son #4 is a talkative
kid so it took them a lot longer to clean his teeth because the
hygienist had to stop ever 10 seconds to let him talk. Then when
it was son #3’s turn to get in chair, son #4 said he wanted the
tools so he could do the job. They didn’t let him.
And, my sweet wife found out today why son #4 was so surprised
that he actually got money from the tooth fairy after losing his
first tooth a week or so ago. He told my sweet wife today that
because his brothers tease him so much, that he rarely believes
what they say. And when they said he’d get money from a tooth
fairy... that was just a bit much for him to believe. But, he was
happy when she did come!
Enjoy today’s Jokes!
AMAZINGLY SIMPLE HOME REMEDIES
1. If you are choking on an ice cube, don't panic. Simply pour a
cup of boiling water down your throat and presto, the blockage
will be almost instantly removed.
2. Clumsy? Avoid cutting yourself while slicing vegetables by
getting someone else to hold them while you chop away.
3. You can avoid arguments with the Mrs. about lifting the toilet
seat just by using the sink.
4. For high blood pressure sufferers: simply cut yourself and
bleed for a few minutes, thus reducing the pressure in your
veins. Remember to use an egg timer.
5. A mouse trap placed on top of your alarm clock will prevent you
from rolling over and going back to sleep after you hit the snooze
button.
6. If you have a bad cough, take a large dose of laxatives. Then
you will be afraid to cough.
7. Have a bad toothache? Smash your thumb with a hammer and you
will forget all about the toothache.
8. Sometimes, we just need to remember what the rules of life
really are: In life, you only need two tools - WD-40 and Duct
Tape. If it doesn't move but should, use the WD-40. If it should
not move and does, use the duct tape.
9. Remember: Everyone seems normal until you get to know them.
10. Never pass up an opportunity to go to the bathroom.
When I dropped my son off at college, we found that he was
assigned to the fourth floor of a dormitory. As I trudged through
the parking lot to retrieve yet another load to carry up the four
flights of stairs, two young women caught my attention from a dorm
window. "Hey, Mom!" one called down. "Yo, Mom!" I was too tired
to respond, so I just ignored them until I heard the second girl
ask the first, "How do you know that woman is somebody's mom?" The
first girl replied, "Who else would do that?"
A man came into a gun shop and asked to see a shotgun. The clerk,
seeing that the customer was well-dressed and probably had a well-
padded pocketbook, showed him a Belgian handcrafted mother of
pearl inlay weapon and demonstrated its fine points. A bargain at
$12,000. The customer says, "No, not quite what I need." Then the
clerk brings out an English model and shows off its fine points. A
steal at only $7,500. The customer says, "No, I don't need
anything that fancy." The clerk, disappointed, shows the customer
a Winchester 'over and under' mass production model. Only $299.95.
The customer says, "That will do nicely. After all, it's an
informal wedding."
1/29 - Dog Fruit II
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Monday, January 29, 2007
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was a relatively quiet weekend. I was on call, and was sick
with a hacking cough. It doesn’t help with the annual January
inversion and all the particulates in the air. School is hard, but
then it’s supposed to be.
I’ll let you enjoy the comments from last week’s Buddy vs. the Pear paintings.
And,
Enjoy today’s Jokes!
Marty
=-=-=-
Hi, I definitely vote for the dog!!! The pear doesn't even look
like a pear!!! Tell your sweet wife to enter her work again and
again whenever she has a chance. It's worth looking at. She has a
gift.
Marge S.
[Thanks. Wait, I hid your last name. Are you related to Homer?]
I liked your wife's picture the best. It looked better than a
beginners work!! You have a very cute dog. She did a great job
I pray for your family often and I am glad that #4 is doing well.
Glad that you are going to school for radiography. I'm an RT and
last year our hospital went from films to PACS The images come out
a lot better than plain films. Great technology We can even
digitalize plain films to be viewed via computer.
~Vicki D
[Yeah, but that reminds me too much of work.]
Marty, Your Sweet Wife's painting is much better than that
painting of someone's backside. To me, that's what it looks like.
Sorry, but you asked.
~Semper Fi, Tom K.
[I told my sweet wife it looked like someone bending over picking
up something, but she told me I couldn’t say that here... Oops.]
Buddy looks like a dog. The pear kinda looks like a pear sitting
on a ??? in a room with lousy, swirly, shiny, wallpaper. Art is
subjective. The judging was done before meal time. The pear won.
FIDO - Forget It, Drive On
~C. M.
[FIDO ‘eh? I’ll have to remember that one. But, you’re right, but
it makes for a good couple of issues, don’t you think?]
Marty, I’ve been subscribing to you since 2000 and have always
wanted to keep up with your son #4. I’ve prayed for him since I
first learned of his brain tumor. This the first time that I’ve
ever made a comment but after checking out Sweet wives painting of
Buddy; I felt compelled to voice my indignation of the second
place ribbon. I do not understand the guide lines used in judging
these paintings but clearly to my “sticky hicks” background, Buddy
is the much better painting. Maybe it was because a pear can’t
move and doesn’t breathe. I’m appalled at the comparison and the
difference of the two paintings. I would like to know how they
make a decision. I think there should be a statement of what guide
lines are used in the judging and what are the characteristics
they look for in a painting and what exactly they base their
decision on. I’m afraid that I would have insisted on asking and
expecting an explanation. If they would post that information;
your sweet wife could make a more informed decision as to which
show she would like to place her work for consideration. Just
thinking out loud! Thanks for many years of excellent reading and
food for thought.
~Joni D. Houston, Tx.
[I think someone was hungry before they judged. As a friend told
me, FIDO... Houston ‘eh? I got a sister somewhere down there. Do
you know her? ‘grin’]
Hi Marty: I totally agree with you. I guess it's in the eye of the
beholder. I enjoy your updates and your insight into family
dynamics. Keep up the great work.
Shirley - New Brunswick, Canada
[Brr... isn’t it cold up there?]
Your wife's painting should have had first place. No question
about it. It's really good. I could probably have done the pear,
and I can't paint at all.
Sincerely, Aileen K.
[I couldn’t even do the pear, that’s why I compute for a living...]
Marty, I have to agree with you, the dog picture is MUCH better
than the pear. I liked the background on the pear, but that's
about it.
Jen B.
Maybe if [your sweet wife] had put little squigglies in the
background she could have won first place. Just kidding. I like
the dog picture more than the pear. How long has it been since I
have done a Friday issue? Man, I am a slacker. I'll try to get one
together tomorrow.
~Justin
[Slacker? Boy, I’ll say. But you did do a great issue yesterday,
and the readers, (And I!) thank you for it!]
Slacker...
Hi Marty, I prefer from far the pear. I think that art is more
than just reproducing reality. The pear is not for eating; it is
for looking at and also to feel the warmth emitting from the whole
picture. The dog is very cute and cuddly; I might want to have a
real dog like that in my house. But not on my wall! By the way, I
enjoy reading your stories about your family and also your jokes.
I often translate them in French and send them to my friends.
Have a good day
Jacqueline C. Near Montréal Canada
[Well, we do serve all kinds here. Montreal, isn’t that where
Justin served a church mission? Looks like he left some work up
there! Ok, I’m JUST kiddin’ around with ya. Thanks for the
comment.]
Boy, those judges need to have their heads examined!!! I love your
dog. He's so cute. Your beautiful wife has great talent. I hope
she pursues it and can paint to make big bucks. Glad your little
slugger is comming along alright. Kids are so resilient. God bless
you and your family.
Sally
[Thanks Sally!]
Marty, I'm sorry your sweet wife wasted her time filling out the
entry papers for that contest. Next time I hope she tries where
they appreciate good art. (She was definitely robbed of the 1st
place ribbon she deserved.)
Keep on keepin' on,
~Bob B.
[No worries. She had fun doing it!]
I was lucky enough to see the originals at that art show and I
said the same thing. Buddy beat the others, hands down. Of course,
I don't know anything about art. I did ask around and found that
the judge was supposed to be the best in the state. I won't
comment about that.
Love, Mom
[That painting would look great in your living room. Maybe we’ve
found a buyer folks! (grin)]
Dear Marty, I guess I don't understart art either! Your sweet
wife's dog is MILES ahead of the pear. (Ya' sure that's a pear?)
Sorry pear guy, but that is ugly -- unless perhaps you need a
touch of red somewhere in your house..........
~Betty H.
[Ahh... But art is art. Someone liked it.]
Hi Marty,Personally, I prefer the dog. But then I know zilch
about art. First or second your wife did very well & I hope she's pleased.
~Regards, Ruth R.
"BUDDY" BY A MILE !!!!
[Thanks for all the comments! Now on to the jokes.]
Nothing rattles my father-in-law, especially while his favorite
team is playing. One afternoon we were watching football when my
in here." Without taking his eyes off the screen, my father-in-law
barked, "Give it some cough medicine."
When we agreed to help our sergeant move to a new apartment, we
didn't know the elevator wasn't working. So after hours of
carrying heavy boxes and furniture up 11 floors, we were wiped
out. And when the sergeant asked us to search for his favorite
pot, no one moved. "I'll give a bottle of Scotch to whoever finds
it," he shouted. Within minutes, a private found the pot. "Good,"
said the sarge. "Now look for the Scotch."
At the company water cooler, I bragged about my children's world
travels: one son was teaching in Bolivia, another was working in
southern Italy, and my daughter was completing a yearlong research
project in India. One co-worker's quip, however, stopped me short.
"What is it about you," he asked, "that makes your kids want to
get so far away?"
1/18 - Thursday Already?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thursday, January 18, 2007
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wow, is it Thursday already? Time flies when you’re having fun I
guess. Son #4 lost his tooth a couple of days ago. He wants to
wait until he can borrow Grandma’s tooth box to put it under his
pillow. Only, I haven’t had a chance to stop by and pick it up
from her. Does that make me a bad parent?
This week we’re doing an install of new radiology computer
equipment in Davis County. It’s about a 45 minute drive from my
house, and I’ve had to leave there late every night. Then I’ve got
school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It makes for an interesting
week. I’m certainly glad I didn’t schedule anything on Monday
nights so I can spend some time with the family!
But, tomorrow I’ll at least get to spend some time with son #2 on
a winter campout. Brr... with temps this cold, it better be worth
it!
Enjoy today’s Jokes!
The computer swallowed grandma.
Yes, honestly its true.
She pressed 'control' and 'enter'
And disappeared from view.
It devoured her completely,
The thought just makes me squirm.
She must have caught a virus
Or been eaten by a worm.
I've searched through the recycle bin
And files of every kind;
I've even used the Internet,
But nothing did I find.
In desperation, I asked Jeeves
My searches to refine.
The reply from him was negative,
Not a thing was found 'online.'
So, if inside your 'Inbox,'
My Grandma you should see,
Please 'Copy,''Scan' and 'Paste' her
And send her back to me!
My mom has a lead foot, so I was not surprised when a state
trooper pulled us over as we were driving through Georgia. Hoping
to get off with a warning, Mom tried to appear shocked when he
walked up to the car. "I have never been stopped like this
before," she said to the officer. "What do they usually do,
ma'am," he asked, "shoot the tires out?"
An 80 year old man went to the doctor for a checkup and the doctor
was amazed at what good shape the guy was in. The doctor asked,
"To what do you attribute your good health?"
The old timer said, "I'm a golfer and that's why I'm in such good
shape. I'm up well before daylight and out golfing up and down
the fairways."
The doctor said, "Well, I'm sure that helps, but there's got to be
more to it. How old was your father when he died?"
The old timer said, "Who said my father's dead?"
The doctor said, "You mean you're 80 years old and your father is
still alive? How old is he?"
The old timer said, "He's 100 yrs old and, in fact, he golfed with
me this morning. That's why he's still alive, he's a golfer."
The doctor said, "Well, that's great, but I'm sure there's more to
it. How about your grandfather? How old was he when he died?"
The old timer said, "Who said my grandpa's dead?"
The doctor said, "You mean you're 80 years old and your
grandfather's still living! How old is he?"
The old timer said, "He's 118 yrs old."
The doctor was getting frustrated at this point and said, "I guess
he went golfing with you this morning too?"
The old timer said, "No...Grandpa couldn't go this morning because
he got married."
The doctor said in amazement, "Got married!! Why would a 118-year-
old guy want to get married?"
The old timer shot back, "Who said he wanted to?"
1/9 - You're serious!?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tuesday, January 09, 2007
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Five years ago, (or was it six?) I got a degree in computer
programming at the local community college. They run a pretty good
program. At least they did back then. Since I got my new job in
Radiology, I thought it was a good idea (and so did my boss) that
I take some classes about anatomy and radiology. I started
tonight. I’m taking a biology class which is a prerequisite for
anatomy. Plus I’m taking an on-line radiology class. There are two
book required for biology. There is one workbook for the lab, and
a big thick hard back for the class. I about had a heart attack
when I saw how much they were. $45 for a stupid workbook, and $150
for the book! Talk about sticker shock. I had heard books had gone
up in price, but this is ridiculous!
Enjoy today’s Jokes!
A wandering monk walked barefoot everywhere he went, to the point
that the soles of his feet eventually became quite thick and
leathery. And because he ate very little, he gradually became very
frail. Several days often passed between opportunities to brush
his teeth, so he usually had bad breath. Therefore, throughout the
region, he came to be known as the super-calloused fragile mystic
plagued with halitosis.
Parents are expected to participate in their children's education,
and my friends were no exception. They gladly help their fifth-
grade son, Andrew, whenever he's stumped. One day after school,
Andrew ran into the house waving a paper in the air. "Hey, Mom,
great news! There were only three mistakes on my math homework,"
he announced. "You made one, Dad made one and I made one!"
The phone rang. It was a salesman from a mortgage refinance
company. "Do you have a second mortgage on your home?"
"No," I replied.
"Would you like to consolidate all your debts?"
"I really don't have any," I said.
"How about freeing up cash for home improvements?" he tried.
"I don't need any. I just recently had some done and paid cash," I
parried.
There was a brief silence, and then he asked, "Are you looking for a husband?"
