Marty's Joke of the Day

Marty's Joke of the day is an internet column that I've written for more than 5 years.
I tell humorous stories about my "sweet wife" and raising our 4 young sons, named #1, #2, #3, and #4.
After 5 years of story telling, in August of 2005, doctors found a brain tumor in son #4.
Our focus here has changed little as we still try to find humor in our lives.

8/15 - Teasing and Checking in

Dave Said: "I was just checking in on you all - I hope all is well"

Yes, Dave. I'm still here. Things have been really hectic here, and
I haven't taken the time to write. Plus, once I get out of the
habit of writing, it's hard to get back in.

Our High School Reunion went well. It was a lot of work, but well
worth it. We're still working on the flooded basement. Each day I
go to work, come home and rip out walls in the basement and finish
putting together the bathroom. The tile, shower, sink, and toilet
are now in place, and that part is starting to come together. On
the rest of the basement we're still trying to get contractors to
come and bid the job, and then find places in the garbage cans for
all of the walls we take out.

Over the past couple of weeks I keep seeing things that are funny
and say to myself, "I could use that in the JOTD." But then I don't
get to the computer fast enough to remember it. But, I called my
sweet wife this morning and asked if she had remembered anything
funny. She had one.

We tease a lot in our house. And son #4 gets it just as much as the
rest of the boys. He has a very difficult time seeing things that
are close in color (IE: mashed potatoes on a white plate or a green
toy gun on the green grass. [ok, a brown toy gun on the brown
grass]) Anyway, we'll tease him and say something like, "What, do
you think you're blind or something??" Not enough to hurt him, but
hopefully just enough to prepare him for a cruel world in his
future. And he really takes it in stride.

When we're working on the basement and ask one of the boys to do
something, or point out something obvious, they'll say, "Duh mom!
I'm not blind!" And, since the family has been working a lot
together downstairs, little boys pick up habits from bigger boys.
The other day my wife said something obvious to son #4 and he
yelled back, "Duh mom! I'm not that blind!"

Enjoy today.

Boys have to be tough to live together.

I tease my kids and their friends pretty much non-stop.

At St. Jude in the endocrine clinic, Steven has to fill out a form every time we go that details all sorts of stuff, including how his social life is, if there are any terrible stresses at home, etc.

One of the things they ask is if he gets teased.

He filled it in, "Yes, by my mother".

Dave's no here, man. My name is "Doug".

Funny enough, I work with a guy named Dave. All day long, I get called "Dave" when they really mean me. Or, he's called "Doug" when they mean him.
